Vertical video to horizontal (16:9)
Filmed upright on a phone and need it widescreen? Drop the vertical clip and get a 16:9 video: the whole picture in the middle over a soft, blurred copy of itself (no black bars), or a crop you slide up and down to keep what matters. It is made in your browser, with no watermark and no upload.
Source, with the crop
Exports at 1080 px wide with the original sound. Add captions afterwards in Add captions to video.

- Start with
- A 0:40 vertical clip filmed on a phone at a workshop.
- Do this
- 16:9, whole frame over a blurred background, export.
- You get

Text near the top or bottom of the vertical clip stays visible; a crop would cut it off.

Questions
How do I make a vertical video horizontal without black bars?
Pick "Whole frame, blurred background" (the default here): the clip stays whole in the middle and the sides are filled with a blurred, darkened copy of the same video, the way TV news shows phone footage.
Can I crop instead, to fill the screen?
Yes: choose Fixed crop and slide the position to keep the face or the subject in frame. A 16:9 crop of a 9:16 clip keeps about a third of its height, so use it for footage with room to spare.
Will it lose quality?
The video is re-encoded at 1920x1080 at a high bitrate. A phone clip is usually 1080 wide, so the picture in the middle keeps its own sharpness.
Can it go the other way, horizontal to vertical?
Yes: the reframe tool turns 16:9 into 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, and can follow the speaker's face.
