Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail in 2026?

YouTube's help page recommends 3840×2160 pixels for videos (16:9) and 2160×3840 for Shorts (9:16), at least 640 px on the short side, as JPG or PNG. Podcast playlists use a square 1:1 image.

Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too big?

The YouTube app on a phone takes thumbnails up to 2 MB (10 MB for podcasts); on a computer the limit is 50 MB. Keep "Keep under 2 MB" selected and the JPG quality is lowered just enough to fit.

My image is the wrong shape. Will it be stretched?

Never. Fill crops it to the new shape (slide to choose what stays), and "Whole picture, blurred background" keeps all of it over a soft blurred copy of itself.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is resized in your browser and saved straight to your device.
