Questions

Why use a GIF instead of a video?

GIFs play inline almost everywhere video doesn't: most email clients, README files, many docs and help-desk tools. For social media, post the video instead.

How do I keep the GIF small?

Short (2–6 seconds), 480 px wide and 10–12 frames per second is the sweet spot. Or pick "Must fit under 5 MB" and the width and frame rate step down until it fits.

Why does my screen recording GIF stay small?

Pixels that don't change between frames are stored once, so screen recordings with a still background compress very well.

Is there a watermark or a length limit?

No watermark. Very long GIFs get big quickly, so we suggest keeping them under 15 seconds.
