How to Cut Clips to the Beat in Premiere Pro Automatically
Premiere can lay a whole bin of clips onto your beat markers in one step with Automate to Sequence. Here is how to get the markers, which settings to choose and what to check afterwards.
Once your song has a marker on every beat or bar, the slow part of a montage is dragging each clip into place. Premiere Pro can do that part for you: Automate to Sequence drops the clips you select onto the timeline's markers, one clip per marker.
1. Put the markers on a sequence
The markers must be timeline markers. Clip markers made in the Source Monitor don't count here. The quickest way is to drop the song into the BPM and beat detector, check the beat with the click track, choose every beat, every bar or every 2 bars, and download the XML. In Premiere use File โ Import: it opens as a sequence holding the song, with the markers on it. The beat markers guide has each step.
2. Choose how often to cut
One clip per beat gets tiring fast, and it needs a lot of clips. At 120 BPM, a 60-second song has 120 beats but only 30 bars of 4/4. Every bar suits most montages; every 2 bars suits slower, wider shots. Frames per beat shows how long each cut will be.
3. Run Automate to Sequence
- Open your sequence and park the playhead where the first clip should start.
- Select the clips in the Project panel, in the order you want them.
- Choose Automate to Sequence at the bottom of the Project panel.
- Set Ordering to Selection Order and Placement to At Unnumbered Markers. "Unnumbered" just means ordinary timeline markers.
- Press OK.
Tick Ignore Audio in the same box if you don't want the clips' own sound on the timeline under your song.
What to check afterwards
- Clips that are too short: a clip shorter than the gap to the next marker leaves a hole. Look for black along the timeline.
- Every clip starts at its own beginning or In point: set an In point on each clip in the Source Monitor first, or the first second of every clip is what lands on the beat.
- One-frame gaps: some editors report a small gap between clips placed this way. Zoom in and check before you export.
- Clip Overlap: this option only works with Sequentially, so it does nothing at markers.
Then make it feel edited
Automation gives you a first pass. Swap the shots that land badly, and move a few cuts off the beat: a cut slightly ahead of the drum hit often feels tighter than one exactly on it.
