YouTube Chapters Not Showing? The Rules Your Timestamps Must Follow
YouTube turns description timestamps into chapters only when they follow its rules. The checklist, the reasons chapters can be unavailable on a channel, and a quick way to draft a valid list.
Chapters split a YouTube video into named sections on the progress bar, so viewers can jump to the part they came for. You add them by typing timestamps into the description. When they don't appear, it is almost always one of a few rules.
The rules (from YouTube's help page)
- The first timestamp starts at zero:
0:00. - At least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Every chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
A list that breaks any one of them is shown as plain text, not as chapters. The first line is the usual culprit: a list that starts at 0:15 because the intro "doesn't count" breaks the rule.
When the list is right but chapters still don't show
- Advanced features: YouTube's help page says that if you don't have access to chapters yet, you apply for access to Advanced features in YouTube Studio.
- Strikes and sensitive content: the same page says chapters aren't available when the channel has an active strike, or when the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.
- Automatic chapters: YouTube can add chapters on its own for eligible videos. Your own timestamps override them, and you can switch automatic chapters off per video or in your upload defaults.
The rules and settings are on YouTube's Video Chapters help page; check it if something here no longer matches.
Draft a valid list from your transcript
- Paste the video's link into the YouTube chapters tool; when the video has captions, they load in seconds. You can also drop the video file.
- Chapter breaks are suggested where you pause between sentences. Choose how many you want, or leave it on Auto.
- Each title starts with the first words of its section, so you know where you are. Rewrite them short and specific: "Fixing the hinge" helps a viewer more than "Part 3".
- The list is checked before you copy it: a first chapter at 0:00, at least three chapters, none shorter than 10 seconds, and none without a title.
- Paste it into the description in YouTube Studio and save.
Good chapter titles
Viewers read chapter titles on the progress bar while scrubbing, where only a few words fit. Name what happens in the section, not its position, and keep the words a viewer would search for.
