ChatGPT chat downloader

Turn a shared ChatGPT chat into a clean PDF, Word document, Markdown or text file, with every message in order and who said what. Copying from the chat page drops messages and the labels; this reads the chat's own data in your browser and makes the files on your device. Send ChatGPT's last reply straight to the teleprompter if it wrote you a script.

ChatGPT doesn't let our server open chat links, so the chat comes from your own browser, on a computer:

  1. Bookmark button. Drag Cuescribe transcript to your bookmarks bar. Open the shared chat (chatgpt.com/share/…) and click the bookmark: the chat opens here, ready to save.
  2. Saved page. On the shared chat, save the page (Save page as, "Webpage, HTML only") and drop the file below.

Questions

Why can't I just paste the link?

ChatGPT doesn't let other websites' servers open shared chats; it answers ours with an error. So the chat has to come from your own browser: the bookmark button reads it from the chat page you have open, or you save that page and drop the file here.

How do I save my own chat?

In ChatGPT, open the chat and press Share, then copy the link (shared links show the chat up to that moment). Open that link on a computer and click the bookmark button there. A chat link that isn't shared (chatgpt.com/c/…) only opens for you while you are logged in, so it has to be shared first.

What ends up in the file?

Every message you can see in the shared chat, in order, labelled You or ChatGPT, with headings, lists, tables, links and code kept. ChatGPT's hidden steps (tool calls, "thinking" notes) are left out, as in the chat itself. Pictures stay private to ChatGPT even in a shared chat, so the file marks where each one was.

How do I get a PDF?

Press Save as PDF: a clean page of the chat opens with your browser's print dialog; pick "Save as PDF" as the printer. The text stays real text, so you can search it and copy from it.

Is my chat uploaded?

No. The chat goes from the ChatGPT page to this page inside your browser, and the files are made on your device. We only count which buttons are used, never what the chat says.

Does it work on a phone?

Not well yet: a bookmark button is awkward to use on a phone, and phone browsers don't save pages as HTML. Open the shared link on a computer instead.
